Dulce Nombre de Maria, Chalatenango
The small town of Dulce Nombre de Maria (Sweet name of Maria) is a
quaint mountain town in the Department of Chalatenango. Very picturesque,
quite mountain town offers fresh air and a very slow life style, even
by El Salvador standards. There are plenty of local comedores (eateries)
as well as pupuserías, small stores, pharmacies and the rest
that one might find in other small Salvadorian towns. The people here
are very friendly and more that willing to help when asked as like
most Salvadorians. Take a couple of hours to explore this small town
and lets us know what else it has to offer. At the town city hall
(closed on weekends) one can get tourist information about the town
and surrounding areas.
Presently there are no hostels or hotels in town, but we found one
place 2 kilometers above the small town even higher up in the mountains
that offers small, very simple, rustic cabins for $5(one double bed)
and $10(2 double beds) a night. Manantial
de la Montaña with its swimming pools and over 17 acres
of mountain top to hike and explore is a great choice for those that
want to really get away from it all. The views from the mountain trails
are excellent and at the top one can see the Guazapa Mountain, the
San Salvador and San Vicente volcanoes as well as mountains of surrounding
Chalatenango and Honduras. You may also see wildlife while hiking
the trails, white tail deer, raccoons and many bird species are native
to this zone.
After your hike or just to relax take a swim, Manantial de la Montaña
has two pools, one large pool for adults and the other for children,
both pools have small slides, great fun for the kids.
The food at their small restaurant is good and with lunches for $2.50
a great deal even though there are no waiters.
Whether you want to spend the night or just get away for the day,
this is place in the mountains of Chalatenango makes a good option.
If you plan on spending the night, make sure to pack some warm clothes
as it does get cool.
